A roof window - skylight

A skylight is a special type of window built into the roof of a house in order to allow natural light to come into the house directly.

(skylight) is a neat feature that adds a dramatic element of light to a room. Traditionally reserved for the kitchen or bathroom, roof windows are now incorporated throughout the house, including walk-in closets and hallways.

Types of Roof Windows

There are nine main skyligt styles , which may be used for both ventilating and for fixed skylights. Five of these are relatively common in small to medium sized houses. The cost and difficulty of installation can depend greatly on the style that is chosen.

The actual window/glass part of a roof window is typically bubble-shaped or flat glass with a rectangular frame. Roof windows are also classified by the shape of their light shaft framing.

Shaft: A straight corridor that funnels light into a narrow area. A shaft is needed when the roof line is more than a foot or so away from the ceiling.

Flared shaft: A bell-shaped, obtuse shaft that widens, allowing more area to be lighted.

Cathedral: Most common type. Ceiling is close to the roof line, thereby eliminating the need for a shaft.

A flat skyligt is probably the most common, consisting of a square or rectangular piece of flat glass or acrylic, which may be fixed or ventilating. A round  emerges from the roof as a half-sphere bubble. A polygon skyligt peaks up out of the roof with a number of glass or acrylic polygons - these skylights are considerably more expensive than simpler models, but are also very aesthetically impressive. A pyramid skyligt is a simple four-triangle pyramid which juts out of the roof. Finally, a dome  is similar to a flat skyligt , except that the glass rounds up past the surface of the roof.

In addition to these primary residential styles, there are four styles of skyligt more often associated with large buildings. The hip ridge  is a long rectangular skyligt which peaks up above the roof surface to a central ridge, with a sloping triangular piece of glass on either short end. The ridg skyligt is a simpler version, with two long triangles sloping in towards one another, and straight triangles closing off either end. The lean-to  is a simple slope which rises from the roof of one story and ends by leaning against an upper wall of the next story. The barrel vault skyligt   is a more complex form of the lean-to, which consists of a half-sphere against an upper wall, often seen in large arboretums.
